Aruba extends closure of airspace with Venezuela again

Local | By Correspondent July 24, 2023

ORANJESTAD - Last Friday, Aruba extended the closure of its airspace with Venezuela for an additional three months. This measure applies to both general and commercial aviation, including passenger, cargo, and postal transport.

Venezuela remains on the list of countries considered a threat to national security, as published by the Dutch intelligence service. This ban has been in place since March 9, 2020, initially as part of measures against the then ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, but it is now being extended even after the end of Covid-19 restrictions.

Aruba's Prime Minister, Evelyn Wever-Croes, recently admitted that there may soon be a possibility of opening the border solely for air cargo. This would be done in close cooperation with Venezuela, similar to the current situation at the maritime border. The maritime border has been recently reopened but exclusively for cargo such as fruits and vegetables.
