Art and Children’s Rights Unite in Interactive Theater Performance in Willemstad

WILLEMSTAD – On Thursday, May 22, 2025, Theater Habaai will host a special and meaningful closing event for a large-scale educational project focused on children’s rights. The event features a bilingual and interactive theater performance organized by Stichting De Cultuur Kameleon and Lot’s Foundation, attended by students from the island’s primary education system.

The performance, starring actresses Greysha Niebe and Esmée Pieters, blends theater, music, movement, and audience interaction into a lively and creative stage experience. Told in both Papiamentu and Dutch, the story centers on a character named Lot, exploring themes such as listening to one another, friendship, grief, and the importance of expressing emotions—core values inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was the central theme in the classroom workshops leading up to the show.

Since January, more than 800 students from grades 6, 7, and 8 on Curaçao have taken part in a series of creative workshops led by professional theater instructors. Through drama, language, and expression, children learned to use their voices and reflect on their rights as children. The performance brings their collective voices to the stage, creating a powerful artistic expression of what it means to grow up with rights in today’s society.

The project highlights how arts education can do more than ignite creativity—it can also foster social awareness and self-confidence. It demonstrates what becomes possible when culture, education, and children’s rights intersect in a safe, imaginative environment.

The performance is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action: to listen to children, to take them seriously, and to make their rights visible and part of daily conversations at school, at home, and in the community.

The initiative was made possible by Stichting De Cultuur Kameleon with support from Samenwerkende Fondsen Cariben and Kinderpostzegels Nederland.
