WILLEMSTAD - After a dispensation period of 2 months, which concluded on October 31, the control team took decisive steps to address irregularities in Aqualectra's distribution network and also the illegal use of water and/or electricity. From November 1, 2023, until now, more than 308 businesses, shops, and residences have been inspected, and from these, 6 commercial businesses and 54 residences were found in violation. The fines for violations in situations like these can range up to 20,000 guilders. The highest fines imposed during this period were 15,000 florins at a business on Rooseveltweg and 15,000 guilders at a business located on Santa Rosaweg.
Individuals who create irregularities in the water and electricity network by manipulating installations or by illegally altering or removing parts of the water and/or electricity network cause significant revenue losses for Aqualectra. Consequently, irregularities in our network create additional costs for our community. Currently, law-abiding citizens bear the expenses caused by irregularities in our water and electricity distribution network. Moreover, when individuals tamper with the distribution network, they can create dangerous situations and disturbances in the areas where they tamper, such as removing cables or water pipes.
To counteract this, the control team continues its efforts to detect and stop irregularities in our water and electricity distribution network. The control team consists of Aqualectra, KPC, and the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM). When illegal situations are identified at residences, businesses, or other premises, the residents or business owners may face fines that can range up to 20,000 guilders, payment of expenses for correcting the installations, possible legal actions, and publication of the actions taken in the media. These individuals must also be aware that, in addition to fines, they are required to pay for the unregistered use of electricity or water that occurred during the period when the irregularities took place, along with any past due amounts.
