WILLEMSTAD - On Monday, August 28th, Curaçao experienced a record electricity demand when around 10 PM the demand reached 143.7 Megawatts (MW). This is higher than the previous record demand of 138.8 MW registered last year on September 5th. Despite this historical demand, Aqualectra says it managed to provide the community with the customary electricity, allowing everyone to have a peaceful night.
During these days, there's little wind, so we cannot fully rely on high windmill production. For example, on Monday, wind turbines contributed only 19.7 MW out of the total demand of 143.7 MW produced. Based on the weather forecast, we can expect the heat to continue in the coming nights. Thanks to Aqualectra's accelerated maintenance program and the collaboration of Curaçao Refinery Utilities (CRU) in power supply, there's sufficient capacity to provide the community with electricity until we experienced a record demand like the one on the last Monday.
Providing an overview of the various production units that Aqualectra combined in order to meet the record demand of last Monday:
Equipment and capacity
Conventional Engines, 110.8 MW
CRU, 13.2 MW
Wind, 19.7 MW
Aqualectra says it continues to do its utmost to meet the necessary demand for the community. Despite having sufficient capacity to meet the demand, Aqualectra encourages the community to use electricity consciously. “With the cooperation of each and every one of us, we can get through these heatwaves that we are all experiencing.”
