WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra says it is emerging from a turbulent period marked by blackouts, financial pressure, and aging infrastructure after completing five years of large-scale investments in Curaçao’s electricity and water systems.
In its 2025 annual report, the utility described the period from 2021 to 2025 as a recovery and modernization phase aimed at rebuilding reliability and public confidence.
According to the company, the past five years were shaped by repeated power outages, capacity shortages, cyber threats, high fuel prices, and declining trust among consumers.
In 2025 alone, Aqualectra invested a record 233 million guilders into infrastructure upgrades, including the expansion of renewable energy, modernization of the electricity grid, battery storage systems, new transformer stations, and the construction of a new power plant in Salu.
A key part of the modernization strategy has been the commissioning of the Koraal Tabak wind farm and the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), projects that Aqualectra says have helped stabilize the grid and reduce dependence on costly imported fuels.
The utility says these investments mark a major shift toward a stronger and more resilient energy network for Curaçao, as it seeks to reduce operational risks and improve service reliability for consumers.
