Aqualectra requires 750 million guilders for upgrading electricity and water network

Local | By Correspondent March 21, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Aqualectra, the utility company in Curaçao, has announced a need for 750 million guilders over the next three to five years to upgrade its electricity and water network. This investment follows recommendations outlined in a report by the Belgian company Laborelec/Engie. The allocated funds are intended for overall improvements in electricity and water distribution, including investments in sustainable energy and other alternative solutions, with the aim of enhancing consumer services. Financial Director Neysa Isenia disclosed this during a press conference held yesterday.

The necessity of such a significant investment underscores a notable backlog in the maintenance and modernization of the island's infrastructure. Isenia acknowledged that maintenance work on the network had experienced delays since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, in recent years, Curaçao has faced intermittent blackouts, highlighting the urgency of infrastructure improvements.

Aqualectra's plan to allocate resources toward upgrading the electricity and water infrastructure aligns with efforts to enhance service reliability and meet growing consumer demands. The company's commitment to implementing recommendations from the Laborelec/Engie report demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing the island's infrastructure challenges.

As Aqualectra moves forward with its investment plans, stakeholders are hopeful that these efforts will lead to a more resilient and efficient utility network, ensuring a stable supply of electricity and water for residents and businesses alike.
