Aqualectra plans 20% reduction in electricity rates by 2025

Local | By Correspondent August 29, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Local utility company Aqualectra is set to make significant changes in the coming year, aiming to reduce electricity rates by 20%, according to director Neysa Isenia. This major cut in costs will be made possible through the full operation of the new wind turbine installation at Koraal Tabak, as well as other advancements in the company's energy production.

Once the wind farm is fully functional in 2025, half of the energy Aqualectra supplies will be generated from renewable sources, marking a significant step toward greener energy production in Curaçao.

“Our ambition is to achieve a renewable energy penetration of at least 70% by 2027,” said Isenia. She highlighted that renewable energy accounted for roughly 30% of the company’s production in 2023.

Although Aqualectra has invested heavily in renewable energy, international fuel price fluctuations have contributed to rising electricity tariffs in recent years. However, Isenia believes the shift toward more sustainable energy sources will lead to lower costs for consumers in the future.
