Aqualectra Pays Out 136,000 Guilders in Compensation Following August Blackout

WILLEMSTAD - Aqualectra has paid a total of 136,000 Caribbean guilders in compensation for damaged appliances following the island-wide blackout on August 27, according to Managing Director Neysa Isenia, who addressed Parliament on Wednesday.

Isenia revealed that the utility company has so far received 263 claims from affected customers, of which 175 have already been processed. She added that new claims are still coming in, but Aqualectra aims to finalize all remaining cases within two weeks.

The company has rejected 15 claims. In one case, the device in question had already been sold, preventing Aqualectra from verifying the damage. In two other cases, the damage was found not to be caused by the blackout, and in the remaining instances, the appliances were still functioning when inspected by Aqualectra.

The August blackout, which left much of Curaçao without power for hours, prompted widespread complaints and led to hundreds of damage reports. Aqualectra’s management has pledged to continue handling compensation claims transparently and efficiently while taking measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
