Aqualectra Addresses Water Disruptions Caused by Pump Failure in Fuik

Local | By Correspondent January 13, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra, the utility company providing water and electricity to Curaçao, was confronted with a malfunction in one of the pumps at the Fuik water treatment plant on Saturday, resulting in significant disruptions to water distribution, particularly in the northern neighborhoods of Curaçao. In response to the issue, Aqualectra held an emergency press conference on Saturday afternoon.

To alleviate the situation, the utility company temporarily adjusted its water distribution routes and deployed additional storage tanks from other parts of the island. Aqualectra also urged residents to use water sparingly, advising against non-essential water consumption such as car washing and using washing machines.

Technicians worked throughout Saturday evening and night to resolve the issue, and by Sunday morning, Aqualectra confirmed that the plant had returned to normal production capacity. However, it took several more hours for the storage tanks to be fully replenished.
