Aqualectra Acknowledges Service Issues, Urges Government for Clear Energy Policy

Local | By Correspondent April 10, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra, Curaçao’s national utility company, has admitted to internal shortcomings—including power outages and an aging infrastructure—that are affecting service quality. While the company’s staff work daily to ensure reliable delivery of water and electricity, CFO Neysa Isenia says progress is being hindered by a lack of clear policy direction from the government.

In a presentation to the Association of Caribbean Economists, Isenia explained that while the energy transition toward wind and solar power has begun, it is not moving fast enough due to the absence of a long-term governmental vision.

Key decisions on phasing out fossil fuels, promoting electric transportation, and updating building codes have yet to be made. As a result, Aqualectra faces serious limitations in its ability to plan for the future and make necessary investments.

“More policy structure is essential to achieving sustainable progress,” Isenia emphasized.
