WILLEMSTAD - The construction of 24 apartments and four penthouses across six luxurious buildings along the shores of the Spanish Water has been approved. Last week, Curaçao’s Department of Spatial Planning and Development, under the Ministry of Traffic, Transportation, and Spatial Planning, issued a building permit for the Gran Çanári project.
Project Overview
The development will span an eight-hectare plot located between the Jan Sofat Marina and the former Kinderoorden Brakkeput. Named Gran Çanári, the project aims to deliver high-end residential options in one of Curaçao’s most desirable locations.
The project was in the “concept review” phase last year, during which permits had not yet been granted. However, during this period, the site was cleared of vegetation to prepare it for future construction.
Community Concerns
Not all residents are on board with the project. A local resident, whose home overlooks the construction site, expressed concerns about the potential impact on nearby neighborhoods. “What’s happening here could set a precedent for other residential areas on Curaçao,” she said.
Development Milestone
Gran Çanári represents a significant step in luxury real estate development on the island, adding exclusive waterfront housing options while raising questions about balancing progress with environmental and community interests.
