Appeal Ennia case started

Local | By Correspondent March 14, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Yesterday the appeal started in the billion-dollar case of the Central Bank against the former directors of Ennia, including 97-year-old Hushang Ansary, who also had his birthday. He did not speak, as expected.

So did his house lawyer from the United States. The three judges who must pass judgment are not from Curaçao but flew over from the Netherlands especially for this case. They were sworn in before the hearing.

In the First Instance, the former directors of Ennia were sentenced to pay huge damages. For example, Ansary, the then highest boss of Ennia, must pay more than a billion guilders in compensation to his own insurance company Ennia.

He and several fellow directors are accused of deliberately draining Ennia financially. The Central Bank intervened in 2018, placed the insurer under guardianship and filed a lawsuit against the directors to recover the money for the benefit of the policyholders.

The defendants in this case are not only parent company Parman and Ansary himself, but also his daughter Nina Ansary and the former Ennia directors Ralph Palm, Gijsbert van Doorn and Abdallah Andraous

Three days have been scheduled for the treatment, with a possible extension to Thursday.
