WILLEMSTAD - The animal shelter in Parera is set to close, according to the Curaçao Animal Protection Foundation (SDBC). Closure has become inevitable due to ongoing financial difficulties, the SDBC reports. Moving forward, the focus of the Animal Protection Foundation will shift to sterilization and education projects.
The foundation celebrates its 75th anniversary this year and has been a beacon for the care and protection of animals on the island for decades. According to the foundation, government subsidies are insufficient, and the foundation is also facing a significant decrease in donations.
As a direct result of this closure, the shelter will no longer be able to accept new animals. Suitable adoptive families are being sought for the animals currently housed in the shelter. The foundation's staff has been laid off.
According to the Animal Protection Foundation, the closure of the shelter represents a loss for all of Curaçao. The shelter has not only helped countless animals but has also contributed to the community by collaborating with the police, businesses, and government. The foundation warns of the increasing problem of stray animals, which not only pose a danger to public health and safety but also threaten the local environment.
