WILLEMSTAD - An anti-drug operation conducted by the patrol vessel HNLMS Groningen took a drastic turn this morning, transforming into a search and rescue mission for three individuals missing in the depths of the Caribbean Sea. The trio disappeared after the go-fast boat they were aboard exploded and sank. This tragic event unfolded after shots were fired from a Coast Guard vessel at the small boat. Since then, efforts to locate the missing individuals have been underway, with units at sea and in the air from the Caribbean Defense, Coast Guard Caribbean, and the United States Coast Guard all participating in the search.
The alarming incident began in the early hours of June 4 when HNLMS Groningen received a report of a suspicious go-fast vessel operating in international waters near the ABC islands. Responding promptly, HNLMS Groningen deployed two fast interception vessels to intercept the suspect go-fast. However, during the operation, the crew of one of the FRISCs found themselves compelled to fire in self-defense towards the approaching vessel.
Tragically, the situation escalated rapidly when an explosion tore through the go-fast, leading to its rapid descent into the depths of the sea. In the aftermath of the explosion, the fate of the three individuals aboard remains unknown, prompting an urgent and intensive search effort.
The Royal Marechaussee has launched an investigation into the incident, seeking to unravel the circumstances surrounding the explosion and the subsequent disappearance of the individuals involved. As the search continues, hopes remain high for a swift resolution to this distressing ordeal, and authorities are working tirelessly to bring clarity and closure to the families of those affected.
