Ambulance Demonstration at Parliament Turns Chaotic After Stretcher Malfunction

WILLEMSTAD – What was meant to be a demonstration of two newly purchased ambulances for Members of Parliament turned into an unexpected incident on Thursday, when a stretcher collapsed during a live presentation.

The demonstration, organized outside Parliament, involved Health Minister Javier Silvania inviting Yael Plet, a staff member of the MAN-PIN parliamentary faction, to lie on a stretcher for a live demonstration. However, as the stretcher was being wheeled forward, its support mechanism suddenly gave way, causing Plet to fall hard to the ground.

The incident happened in full view of Parliament members and the press, sparking immediate commotion. Footage of the fall quickly circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention and concern.

The demonstration coincided with a parliamentary session where the purchase of the ambulances was under debate. Criticism had already been raised about the height of the vehicles, which allegedly makes them too tall to enter the emergency entrance of the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC).

Minister Silvania was in the middle of explaining the technical features and advantages of the ambulances when the stretcher mishap occurred.

Despite the fall, Plet reportedly suffered no injuries. According to a spokesperson for Parliament, he was helped up moments later and did not require medical treatment.

The incident has added fuel to the ongoing debate about the suitability of the new ambulances, with critics questioning not only their size but now also the quality and safety of their medical equipment.
