WILLEMSTAD - Ensuring financial support for children, the government has reinforced alimony regulations, providing assistance until the age of 21 or 25 for school-goers. The determination of alimony amounts can be achieved through legal proceedings or mutual agreement, with monthly payments mandated from the responsible parent.
As per Article 402a, paragraph 1, of Book 1 of the Civil Code, alimony amounts established through court orders or agreements are subject to automatic adjustment. This adjustment is based on a percentage set by the Minister of Justice, a practice commonly referred to as "indexation."
In a recent development, a ministerial decree dated December 13, 2023, announced that the Minister of Justice has fixed the indexation rate at 2.70% for the calendar year 2024. Consequently, effective January 1, 2024, alimony amounts will be increased by 2.70%.
For instance, a parent currently paying or receiving 100 guilders per month in alimony for a child can anticipate an increment of 2 guilders and 70 cents starting January 1, 2024. This adjustment aims to ensure that the financial support provided aligns with economic changes, guaranteeing the well-being of children receiving alimony.
