Aemil Edgar Albert Carl Alexander Palm: Proud St. Martinus University graduate

Local | By Press release June 3, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Aemil Palm, born and raised on the vibrant island of Curaçao, grew up surrounded by turquoise waters and the rhythmic beats of local music. His middle-class upbringing was enriched with family gatherings, traditional island cuisine, and the unwavering support of his parents.

From an early age, Aemil exhibited a strong interest in science and a deep empathy for others. His aspiration to become a doctor crystallized as he shadowed local physicians and volunteered at the island’s clinic. Recognizing his passion, his parents encouraged him to pursue his dreams despite financial challenges.

As adulthood approached, Aemil faced the daunting task of leaving his close-knit community to attend medical school. Determined to make a difference, he embarked on a journey that would take him far beyond Curaçao’s shores. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced unexpected challenges, but Aemil’s resilience and determination proved invaluable.

After beginning his medical education in Curaçao and the Netherlands, Aemil sought a broader perspective and set his sights on North America. This move, both exhilarating and daunting, allowed him to learn from a diverse medical community and expand his skills.

Through sleepless nights, countless exams, and relentless pursuit of knowledge, Aemil graduated from medical school as both a physician and a global citizen, shaped by his experiences into a compassionate and culturally aware healer.

With the support of St. Martinus University (SMU), Aemil achieved his dream of becoming a medical doctor, earning an MD diploma and ECFMG certification (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates). These accomplishments pave the way for him to pursue postgraduate training in the United States, aiming for a residency in Internal Medicine.

SMU celebrated its 2024 graduating class in Michigan this April, holding a special ceremony to honor Aemil as this year’s Curaçao graduate. While SMU has other alumni from Curaçao, it is always a tremendous honor when a Curaçao citizen chooses SMU to achieve their professional medical goals.

We are optimistic about increasing local admissions and believe that SMU can significantly contribute to the future healthcare workforce with professionals trained at our university, established in Curaçao.
