WILLEMSTAD - In the past nine months, the Advent Hospital has treated more than 4,000 eye patients. The 4,426 treatments encompass both surgical and non-surgical care, including 525 patients who were on the waiting list at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). Some of these patients had been waiting for nearly two years for surgery.
Last year, Advent received permission to bring in four ophthalmologists from Mexico to help reduce the backlog. The month of June saw the highest number of treatments, with 680 patients receiving care. While most cataract surgeries were performed by local professionals, 432 operations were conducted by the Mexican doctors, and 79 by Advent's own staff.
This significant effort by Advent Hospital has been crucial in addressing the long waiting times and providing much-needed care to eye patients in the region.
