Addicts cause disturbance in city center

Local | By Correspondent February 1, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Drug addicts are increasingly causing disturbances in the city center, according to shopkeepers and business owners in the area.

The rise in disturbances is attributed to the closure of the night shelter "Dios Yudami" in 2021, forcing addicts to spend more time on the streets. Most incidents are reported around 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM in the morning when addicts harass people on their way to work or heading home.

Crisis intervention worker Raymond Janzen stated, "It would alleviate a lot of disturbances if the night shelter at Dios Yudami could remain open 24 hours a day, providing clients with a place to go at all times."

Former employees of the night shelter are hopeful that the facility can reopen soon to address the growing concerns in the city center.
