WILLEMSTAD - Starting October 1, buses from ABC Bus Company will keep their doors open while driving. This temporary measure aims to provide relief to drivers and passengers during the extreme heat currently affecting Curaçao. The decision is part of ongoing efforts to repair air conditioning systems in eleven buses and a partial fleet replacement.
In addition to keeping windows open, bus doors will remain open during rides to enhance airflow. This measure will be in place until December, after which its effectiveness will be evaluated.
While this approach is intended to improve comfort, ABC Bus Company management warns that drivers must exercise extra caution to prevent accidents. All drivers are receiving specific instructions on how to safely operate the buses with open doors. Training sessions began this week and will continue until the end of the month.
Moreover, drivers are required to stay fully focused on the road. The use of phones or earphones while driving is strictly prohibited, and drivers are urged to drive defensively and cautiously, especially on Curaçao’s narrow roads where parked vehicles present additional risks.
Air Conditioning
The first two buses with functional air conditioning are expected to be back in service soon, with further repairs to follow. ABC Bus Company is also in discussions with the government about acquiring ten new medium-sized buses to further modernize and replace the fleet. The current buses date back to 2008. The company hopes to introduce five new air-conditioned buses by December.
