A working group investigates the establishment of a cooperative for CMC Specialists

Local | By Correspondent November 7, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Health, Environment, and Nature, Javier Silvania, has formed a multidisciplinary working group to investigate the potential formation of a cooperative for specialists at the Curaçao Medical Center.

This step is being taken in response to the consequences of the National Ordinance on the Norm for Top Incomes for medical specialists. The working group will analyze the financial and tax implications of the law and propose possible alternatives.

Through the ministerial decree signed by Silvania today, the official launch of the 'Working Group for Ensuring Medical Specialist Care in Curaçao' is a fact. The committee is tasked with establishing, by November 13, the conditions that medical specialists must meet to become members of the cooperative.

Within this cooperative, agreements would be made with health insurers, including the Social Insurance Bank SVB, regarding production and budget. The cooperative would also provide and deliver healthcare to patients, hospitals, and other healthcare institutions, including chain care.

In addition to investigating the establishment of the cooperative, the working group is expected to take a position on the tax treatment of specialists associated with the cooperative by November 15. A decision must be made by November 30 on whether the establishment of a cooperative is indeed the best option or whether there are other, better alternatives.

The formation of the cooperative could be an important step for the medical specialists involved to meet the new legal requirements while safeguarding their professional autonomy and income.
