A new school year and a possible heatwave: Has the minister addressed crucial issues for schools?

Local | By Press release August 9, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Parliamentarian Steven Croes has raised several concerns in a letter to the Minister of Education, Sithree van Heydoorn, as the 2024-2025 school year approaches. Croes, a current parliamentarian from the PAR party and former Minister of Education, is closely monitoring the start of the new school year, aware of the ongoing challenges that schools and educational staff face. He emphasizes the need to address several key issues for the well-being of students, teachers, and all school staff, in order to bring about significant changes.

In his letter, Croes asks whether Minister Van Heydoorn has met with school administrations to discuss the various challenges they face, and whether he has held meetings with unions regarding teacher motivation, which has been a longstanding concern. Croes also inquires about the status of the education covenant.

Regarding the threat of a heatwave, similar to those experienced in recent years, Croes questions the progress of research aimed at finding a sustainable solution to manage classroom heat and ensure continuity of lessons during such events. This includes the availability of air conditioning in schools and a plan to implement it across Curaçao.

Digitalization and the provision of devices for both teachers and students remain critical issues, as technology and teaching methods continue to evolve. Croes asks for updates on the progress of this plan.

Finally, Croes highlights the importance of general teaching materials and textbooks, essential tools for every child's educational journey. He stresses the need for all schools to be fully equipped before they welcome thousands of students on Thursday, August 15.
