A new era begins: Tula Museum reopens with inspiring monument unveiling

Local | By Correspondent July 3, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - A new era has dawned for the Tula Museum as it opened its doors on Saturday, coinciding with the Day of Emancipation, at the historic Landhuis Knip. After being left vacant since the bankruptcy of Kas di Kultura in 2020, the museum has now been brought back to life. The reopening of the museum has been made possible with financial support from the Nederlandsche Bank.

The Tula Museum holds a significant theme centered around resistance, resilience, and the transformative journey toward emancipation. It serves as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the past, highlighting the importance of preserving the history and heritage of Curaçao.

During the inaugural event on Saturday, a remarkable monument named "Libertat Galite" was unveiled on the estate, serving as a poignant tribute to the 148 individuals at Knip who were granted their freedom on July 1, 1863. The names of these liberated souls are meticulously engraved in stone, forever commemorating their enduring legacy. Atop the impressive three-meter-high monument, a graceful dove takes flight, symbolizing the emancipated spirits soaring toward a brighter future.

The creation of this meaningful monument is credited to the talented artist Giovanni Abath, whose craftsmanship brings forth a powerful representation of freedom and equality.
