A Festive Celebration to Welcome the Year of the Snake in Willemstad

WILLEMSTAD – The vibrant heart of Willemstad came alive on Wilhelmina Plaza as the local Chinese communities, together with the Chinese Consulate General and the Downtown Management Organization, gathered to celebrate the Year of the Snake. The festive event brought people from all walks of life together to mark the beginning of a new lunar year filled with hope, prosperity, and happiness. 

The Consul General Li Yigang welcomed the crowd with an eloquent speech, emphasizing the significance of the occasion and the enduring bond between China and Curaçao. His heartfelt words resonated with the audience, as he highlighted the importance of celebrating new beginnings and fostering a sense of unity within the community. 

The government of Curaçao was represented by Minister of Education Sithree van Heydoorn, Minister of Transport Charles Cooper, and Minister of Justice Shalton Hato, who joined in the festivities to show their support for the cultural celebration. Several other Consuls were also present during the official presentation, further underscoring the international camaraderie. 

The public was treated to an array of lively performances, including the much-anticipated dragon dance, a colorful and energetic display of traditional Chinese culture. The Chinese Communities offered a variety of cultural presentations, showcasing their rich heritage through music, dance, and art. 

The Chinese Consulate took this opportunity to invite the entire Curaçao community to come together in celebration. As the snake is a symbol of transformation and renewal, the event was a reminder for all to embrace new opportunities and look forward to a year filled with prosperity and joy. 

It was a memorable evening that not only honored the traditions of the Chinese Lunar New Year but also strengthened the bonds of friendship and unity within Curaçao. With the Year of the Snake now underway, the hope for a brighter future, filled with collective success and happiness, was palpable throughout the celebration.
