A day in history: Curaçao impacted by a hurricane

WILLEMSTAD - Today, September 23, 2019 it marks 140 years (1877) since the last hurricane impacted the ABC islands. This category 2 hurricane Tecla caused an estimated structural damage of US$ 2 million, mainly to the coastal section of Willemstad.

A nunnery was destroyed; its remnants are still visible at low tide. Numerous ships were lost and at least 70 deaths were reported. The name Tecla was given to his hurricane after a nun who was living at the nunnery at the time turned out to be the sole survivor of this hurricane at this location.
