Local | By Correspondent December 6, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - New data from the 2023 census conducted by Senso, under the supervision of Curaçao’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), reveals that 8.6% of the island’s population lives with a disability. The findings were shared by the CBS in recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on December 3.

This percentage translates to 13,354 individuals out of Curaçao's total population of 155,826. According to the CBS, individuals with disabilities are defined as those who face significant difficulties performing specific tasks or are entirely unable to complete certain activities.

Gender Disparity in Disability Statistics

Among the 13,354 residents with disabilities, 5,213 are men, while 8,141 are women. The CBS attributes the higher number of women with disabilities to two main factors:

Population Distribution – Curaçao’s population includes more women (85,596) than men (70,162).

Age Demographics – Women are overrepresented in older age groups, where disabilities are more common.

Implications and Awareness

The data highlights the need for inclusive policies and infrastructure to support individuals with disabilities in Curaçao. With women comprising a significant majority of those affected, targeted initiatives may be necessary to address their specific needs.

The release of this data aligns with global efforts to promote awareness and advocate for the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities, as emphasized during the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
