WILLEMSTAD - Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in Curaçao. This is apparent from a survey by the addiction care organization Addiction Management Foundation (FMA). It is striking that a large part of the respondents indicate that they have sometimes driven under the influence, namely 41 percent.
Just under 5 percent of those surveyed have ever had or caused a car accident as a result of alcohol use. The survey was conducted among 418 people. FMA now wants to have a much more extensive study done into other drugs of addiction and their financial impact on society. It is well known that driving under the influence has a negative effect on driving ability. People become more impulsive, but the reaction speed also decreases and the concentration is less.
