WILLEMSTAD - Last week, 45-year-old Jerrely V. was sentenced to thirty months in prison, six of which are suspended. His wife, 40-year-old S.E., was acquitted. Both were accused of theft, fencing, selling, and possession of stolen cars. The suspects denied any involvement in the accusations.
Jerrely was accused of four car thefts, including a Kia Rio stolen on June 18, 2023. The owner of a car stated that he had parked his Kia Picanto that evening at Caracasbaai marina, and upon his return, the car was gone. The police spotted a similar Kia Picanto for sale at the home of the suspect couple in Koraal Specht. Upon inspection, the chassis numbers matched those of a stolen vehicle.
In a conversation intercepted on the day of the theft, the police heard Jerrely saying that he had a complete Kia Picanto for sale. Furthermore, they heard him telling someone that he was still gathering the requested items and that this person should look around the Mambo area and in the neighborhood. Jerrely refused to visit these locations himself since he had stolen a car there before.
The police also found photos of the stolen Kia Picanto on Jerrely's phone, labeled as for sale. Jerrely claimed that he happened to be outside when some boys drove by with the car and asked him to repair it for them. After the repair, he did not see the boys again.
Regarding a theft on May 27, 2023, a man reported that his car was stolen while he was at a nightclub in Saliña. The car, containing his work phone and Valentino perfume, was later located at the home of the suspect couple.
During a judicial raid, the police found the perfume and the phone. Jerrely claimed that he had bought the phone for 250 guilders from a boy in Punda, without knowing it was stolen.
For the final accusation, on July 2, 2023, the owner of another Kia Rio reported that his vehicle was stolen at Grand Café in Pietermaai. After investigation, the police found the vehicle in Williwood. During a monitored conversation between the couple, the police heard Jerrely telling his wife to wait for him where he had taken a jeep.
