2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Expected to Be More Active Than Usual, Says Meteorological Expert

WILLEMSTAD – The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to be more active than normal, according to meteorologist Albert Martis of the Meteorological Service of Curaçao.

A total of 19 tropical weather systems are expected to develop in the region, with 9 of them potentially strengthening into hurricanes. Of those, 4 could become major hurricanes, posing a significant risk to the Caribbean, including Curaçao.

Martis attributes the increased activity to warmer sea surface temperatures combined with the presence of the La Niña phenomenon. La Niña not only contributes to stronger storm development but is also linked to more intense rainy seasons on Curaçao.

The meteorologist warns that even hurricanes that pass at a distance can still cause damage through heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough seas. He urges residents across the region to prepare early for the possibility of extreme weather conditions during the season.

Authorities are expected to monitor developments closely as the hurricane season progresses.
