WILLEMSTAD - The court has sentenced Maicholl Leones-Garcia to eleven years in prison for his role in the murder of 50-year-old trader Angel Barrios Rodriguez, as reported by Èxtra. The defendant was found guilty of being an accomplice to the trader's murder.
Previously, other men were tried in this case. The main suspect, Mauricio O., received a sixteen-year prison sentence. This was not the highest sentence, as he assisted the police and received a reduction in his sentence. The highest sentence was given to his associate Montilon, who received twenty-two years. Three others received sentences ranging from five to ten years.
Leones-Garcia is the last suspect to stand trial. He operated the excavator and dug the hole in which his accomplices buried Rodriguez alive. The accomplices brought the victim, who was handcuffed and blindfolded, to the hole and dumped him in. Leones-Garcia then covered the hole.
However, he was not found guilty of kidnapping the trader. Therefore, instead of the fifteen years demanded, he received eleven years for being an accomplice. The family's claim for 50,000 guilders in damages was rejected due to insufficient evidence.
Report
After the trader's disappearance, his wife reported it to the police. During the investigation, the police arrested the trader's employee, Mauricio O., when he attempted to withdraw money from the missing trader's bank account.
Mauricio confessed to his involvement and revealed the identities of his accomplices. He also led the police to the location of Angel Barrios Rodriguez's body on a plantation. Ten men were charged in this case, with six of them receiving prison sentences ranging from twelve to twenty-two years.
