WILLEMSTAD - The Department of Medicine and Public Health (G&GZ) of the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) has issued a public warning that the flu season has officially begun on Curaçao. The department will be closely monitoring the rise in flu cases over the coming months, as infections typically increase between September and March, with a peak in December.
The main cause of the seasonal surge is the arrival of tourists from the Northern Hemisphere, where flu activity is currently high. Irálce Jansen, head of the Infectious Disease Control Division of the Public Health Service, told the newspaper that these visitors are largely responsible for the transmission of the virus on the island.
The flu can have serious consequences, especially for older adults and people with chronic health conditions. The G&GZ therefore strongly advises eligible residents to get their flu shot early. The vaccine has been available since October at general practitioners’ offices and pharmacies. Those who qualify can receive the vaccination free of charge through their health insurance.
“This is a recurring annual process,” emphasized epidemiologist Irálce Jansen. “People in risk groups usually know when it’s time to get their shot.”
For more information on vaccination and prevention, residents are encouraged to contact their family doctor or the Department of Medicine and Public Health (G&GZ).
