WILLEMSTAD – The government of Curaçao has officially begun preparations for the construction of a new Sentro Pro Arte, the long-awaited replacement for the historic national theater that was destroyed by fire. Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Sithree van Heydoorn, confirmed that the first steps toward a new theater have been taken on the site of the former building on Schouwburgweg.
The original Sentro Pro Arte, built in 1965, had stood vacant since 1998, but was once a cultural landmark where numerous local and international artists performed. For decades, debate surrounded the building’s future—whether to renovate, rebuild, or relocate. Some citizens were so passionate about preserving the structure that they resorted to hunger strikes.
However, after a devastating fire during labor protests by the SGTK union—contractors associated with the Isla refinery—demolition and rebuilding became the only viable option.
Site Cleanup and Asbestos Removal Underway
Preparatory work officially began over the past weekend. Fencing has been installed around the site, and the area is now being cleared of overgrown vegetation and trees, according to Minister Van Heydoorn.
During an on-site inspection with representatives from the Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW), it was discovered that parts of the old structure contained asbestos. This hazardous material is now being professionally removed, marking an important step in ensuring safety ahead of construction.
Once the asbestos removal is complete, the building will be fully demolished, after which the construction phase of the new Sentro Pro Arte can begin.
The return of a national theater is expected to revitalize Curaçao’s cultural scene and provide a modern venue for performances, events, and community engagement.
