UN Experts Warn of Rising U.S.–Venezuela Tensions and Possible Violations of International Law

WILLEMSTAD - Independent United Nations experts have expressed serious concern over the escalating tensions between the United States and Venezuela, warning that recent U.S. actions and threats could violate Venezuela’s sovereignty and the UN Charter.

According to the experts, covert operations and threats of armed force against the Venezuelan government represent a dangerous escalation of pressure by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The experts cited recent reports that boats allegedly involved in drug trafficking were attacked by U.S. forces. They cautioned that if the individuals aboard those vessels were unlawfully killed, such actions would amount to “extrajudicial executions” under international law.

Furthermore, the experts emphasized that preparing or conducting military action against a sovereign nation would constitute an even more serious breach of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force except in self-defense or with Security Council authorization.

President Trump confirmed last week that he had authorized the CIA to conduct operations inside Venezuelan territory. His spokesperson had earlier described the Venezuelan government as a “terrorist drug cartel,” a statement that has drawn condemnation from international observers and human rights organizations.

The UN experts called on both nations to de-escalate tensions and respect international law, urging the global community to remain vigilant as the situation develops.
