Latin American countries demand urgent meeting on Venezuela

CARACAS - Nine Latin American countries are calling for an urgent meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) following the election victory of President Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. The countries, including Argentina and Peru, express serious concerns about the official result. Several Latin American leaders have already voiced their disbelief over the outcome.

The United States has withheld comments until a precise overview of the votes is available. Other Western countries, such as France, are urging the Venezuelan government for complete transparency to determine whether the elections were fair.

According to the official results, Maduro won the presidential elections on Sunday with over 51 percent of the votes. The opposition claims that 70 percent of the votes went to opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia.
