The Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Commission and IATA met earlier this month to discuss the connectivity challenges in the eastern Caribbean, with the goal to find ways to improve intra-regional travel.

Issues to overcome include taxation and airport fees, border-management systems and operational inefficiencies at airports. The meetings discussed current barriers from intra-regional travel growth, as well as upgrading border management systems to more user-friendly ones, and more efficient handling of passengers.

While nothing concrete was confirmed at the meeting, the two organizations are in discussion with the aim to work toward streamlining island-hopping via air.

"Aviation is built on partnerships and collaboration," IATA's area manager for the Caribbean, Annaleen Lord, said in a statement. "Our meeting lays the groundwork for creating opportunities to cooperate more closely to support aviation's ability to deliver even more value to the eastern Caribbean region."
