New route four cruise tourists

WILLEMSTAD - The Dutch project development agency Schonck, Schul & Compagnie wants cruise tourists to be guided via Otrobanda to the pontoon bridge and Punda in the future. The route goes through the Sint Elisabeth Complex and the Breedestraat. This is the starting point of the Masterplan Sehos 2021.

Currently, cruise tourists walk from the cruise ship to the Riffort and then across the pontoon bridge to Punda. The future plan is that the walking route will go via the future Sehos complex to Breedestraat in Otrobanda, the pontoon bridge, Punda and then back via the Riffort to the cruise ship. “In this way, tourists and income are better distributed over the city center and that is good for all of Curaçao,” according to the consultancy. They expect that the new route will provoke resistance.

The rear of the former hospital on Pater Eeuwensweg will be changed in the master plan to become the front of the new complex. Furthermore, no monumental parts or buildings need to be demolished. The costs of renovating and adapting are much higher than for new construction. According to the consultancy, removing the part with the connecting corridors between the old hospital and the Ben Smit building will make it a detached structure. “In this way, the buildings acquire their own identity and function,” according to the consultancy.
