Lagun Public Beach to Close for Renovation Amid Local Opposition

WILLEMSTAD – The public beach of Lagun will be closed from Thursday, March 27, to Thursday, April 3, due to renovation work, the Ministry of Health, Environment, and Nature has announced. The ministry has apologized for any inconvenience caused.

The renovation plans have faced resistance from local fishermen and residents, particularly due to unplanned concrete structures on the beach. During a government-organized meeting, fishermen voiced their concerns, with one emphasizing that the community has maintained the beach for years. He warned that the sea does not respect concrete and predicted that any new structures would be destroyed within five years due to the force of the waves.

The opposition to the Lagun project aligns with wider criticism of modernization efforts across Curaçao, including the planned transformation of Caracasbaai. The 10-million-guilder project includes swimming facilities, sports areas, concert venues, kiosks, and a parking garage. Many locals fear that such developments will alter the character of Curaçao’s beaches and threaten the traditional way of life for fishermen.

It remains unclear what specific renovations will take place at Lagun next week.
