WILLEMSTAD - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines marked its 90th anniversary on Sunday with a special reception at the Curaçao Museum. Among the distinguished attendees were Jonny Andersen, CEO of Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP), and Dirk Buitelaar, KLM’s Regional Manager for the Caribbean, both of whom addressed the guests on the historical and economic significance of the connection between the Netherlands and Curaçao.
The aviation link between the two regions began on December 15, 1934, with the ‘Snip,’ a modified Fokker aircraft. The Snip, which is on display at the Curaçao Museum, served as the backdrop for the celebratory event.
“Since late 1934, this route has built a legacy and continues to be of importance for both regions,” KLM stated. Despite growing competition from airlines such as TUI and Corendon, the route remains economically viable, a fact recently highlighted in an article by De Telegraaf.
Although the Curaçao government expressed concerns at the end of 2022 regarding a reduction in flight frequencies, KLM has reaffirmed its commitment to the air link with the island. The airline’s collaboration with the navy during its early years and the ongoing expansion of its network are testaments to the resilience and value of this historic connection.
KLM remains optimistic about its role in air transport to Curaçao. The 90th anniversary is not only a moment to reflect on the past but also an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen the robust partnership with the island.
