Former Minister Ruisandro Cijntje reflects on Curaçao's economic recovery under his leadership

WILLEMSTAD - Former Minister of Economic Development, Ruisandro Cijntje, highlighted Curaçao's remarkable economic recovery during his tenure, emphasizing the island’s resilience and capacity for growth in the post-pandemic era. In a press release, Cijntje stated, "Since taking office, I implemented economic management strategies that fostered a favorable environment for tourism and economic prosperity."

Tourism, a cornerstone of Curaçao's economy, saw significant growth, with stayover tourism outpacing other Caribbean destinations. "The sector’s recovery was bolstered by strategic expansions in flight capacity and hotel developments, initiatives I strongly supported as minister," Cijntje explained. He noted that the latest IMF reports indicate projected economic growth of 4.5% in 2024, thanks to his collaborative efforts with key stakeholders.

Cijntje further shared that the Central Bank of Curaçao and economic analysts predict even stronger growth, up to 4.9%, painting a more optimistic picture than previously expected. "Personally, I believe the growth may surpass these projections, reaching an impressive 5.1%. These figures are not just statistical achievements but reflect the real impact of the economic policies I led."

The former minister also cited the IMF’s recent Article IV consultation, which highlighted Curaçao’s solid outlook for the near future, largely driven by tourism. Following the decline of traditional industries, the island swiftly capitalized on its tourism potential, attracting new hotels and creating jobs. While this has provided a short-term boost, structural changes are becoming visible, including a recovery in the labor market and increased investment in non-tourism sectors.

"My approach was not limited to expanding existing sectors but also focused on diversifying the economy to ensure sustainable growth," Cijntje said. "My vision goes beyond immediate recovery, aiming to establish a robust framework that fosters long-term prosperity and resilience."

Cijntje concluded by emphasizing that the growth achieved under his leadership is evidence of strategic success in economic development. "This demonstrates how targeted government actions can lead to substantial economic progress. As Curaçao continues to navigate the post-pandemic landscape, the foundations we’ve laid promise to guide the island towards a prosperous future, both locally and regionally."
