Curaçao's Hospitality Sector Continues to Face Chronic Shortage of Qualified Personnel

WILLEMSTAD - The hospitality sector in Curaçao is struggling with a chronic shortage of qualified workers, according to the Curaçao Restaurant Association (CRA) and the Curaçao Association of Small Hotels and Apartments (CASHA).

Despite strong growth in tourism since the COVID-19 pandemic, finding and retaining staff remains a significant challenge. According to the CRA, there has been a shortage of over 4,000 workers since 2021, and with new hotels under construction, the demand for employees is expected to increase further.

“Without additional measures, the quality of service is at risk of declining,” warn the organizations. Many hospitality businesses have been forced to adjust their opening hours, and guests are complaining about long waiting times.

The causes of the shortage include a lack of interest among young people in pursuing a career in hospitality, competition from other sectors, and high workloads during peak periods.

Proposed solutions include training programs, improved working conditions, and international recruitment. CRA and CASHA are urging the government to urgently implement sustainable solutions to address the staffing crisis.
