Corendon’s Flourishing Success in Curaçao: A Story of Vision, Perseverance, and Authenticity

WILLEMSTAD - Curaçao, a jewel in the Caribbean, is experiencing a renaissance in tourism and development. This is in part thanks to the pioneering spirit of Corendon, led by shareholder Atilay Uslu. Through bold investments and a commitment to authenticity, Corendon has reshaped the island’s hospitality landscape and created lasting opportunities for its people. This is not just a story about building hotels—it's a celebration of community, culture, and transformation.

Why Curaçao? A Unique Opportunity

While other islands like Aruba and Sint Maarten are well-established tourist destinations, Curaçao presented a unique opportunity. According to Uslu, Curaçao’s charm lies in its imperfections. “The island’s authenticity and untouched allure make it a haven for travelers looking for genuine experiences,” Uslu remarked in a recent interview.

Aruba, often likened to a piece of America in the Caribbean, has grown increasingly commercialized. Curaçao, on the other hand, offers a rich, multicultural identity and an environment where visitors can feel they’ve truly escaped the ordinary. The island’s relaxed atmosphere, vibrant art scene, and pristine beaches set it apart. For Atilay, Curaçao was a blank canvas, waiting for the right brushstrokes of investment and creativity.

Local Empowerment: A Community-Centric Approach

At the heart of Corendon’s philosophy in Curaçao is the empowerment of local talent. Unlike other major hotels in the region, where foreign interns make up a significant portion of staff, Corendon employs 95% locals.

“We believe the success of a hotel must be rooted in the community,” said Uslu. Corendon invests heavily in training programs to ensure that employees not only meet global hospitality standards but also take pride in showcasing their island’s unique culture. This commitment has created hundreds of jobs and fostered a sense of ownership and pride among local employees.

Corendon’s leadership also extends to fostering local entrepreneurs. From supporting small car rental companies like Smart Wheels to enabling local chefs and restaurateurs to open new beach clubs, Corendon is helping Curaçaoans carve out their own success stories.

Reviving Historic Areas: A Focus on Community and Culture

Corendon’s investments have reached beyond hotels, into the very neighborhoods of Curaçao. One of its crowning achievements is the transformation of Scharloo, a historic district that had fallen into disrepair. Working alongside other stakeholders, Corendon has led efforts to renovate historic buildings, improve infrastructure, and make the area a vibrant hub for locals and tourists alike.

These efforts mirror the company’s success in revitalizing Otrobanda, another historic district that is now a bustling hotspot for dining, shopping, and cultural experiences. “Five years ago, people thought investing in Otrobanda was a crazy idea,” Uslu recalled. “Today, it’s the place to be.”

Environmental Stewardship: From Mangroves to Marine Life

Corendon is also leaving a green footprint on the island. The company took on the monumental task of cleaning up the Mangrove Bos, once one of the most polluted areas in Curaçao. Today, this site boasts crystal-clear waters and thriving ecosystems, thanks to Corendon’s investment in sustainable practices.

In partnership with environmental organizations, Corendon has set its sights on achieving the coveted Blue Flag certification for the area, a symbol of environmental excellence. These efforts not only benefit the environment but also attract eco-conscious travelers who value sustainability.

Diversifying Tourism: Welcoming the World

When Corendon arrived in Curaçao, Dutch visitors made up over 60% of the island’s tourists. Recognizing the need to diversify, Uslu and his team focused on attracting visitors from North and South America. Their efforts have paid off spectacularly. Today, Americans and Brazilians are the second and third largest groups of tourists, and the island sees over 40 weekly flights from the United States alone.

This diversification strategy has been supported by Corendon’s innovative marketing and strategic partnerships with globally recognized brands like Hilton. By operating under the Hilton name in North and South America, Corendon has tapped into a loyal customer base that trusts the brand for quality and reliability.

Shaping the Future: Boutique Hotels and Five-Star Luxury

Corendon’s plans for Curaçao include expanding its offerings to cater to a wider range of travelers. In addition to their large resorts, the company has launched boutique hotel initiatives under the Bajun brand. These boutique properties offer a more intimate experience for travelers seeking tranquility and personalized service.

The upcoming projects include a stunning new five-star hotel that promises to elevate Curaçao’s luxury market. This property, expected to open in 2026, will blend opulence with authenticity, creating a landmark destination for high-end travelers.

A Legacy of Vision and Impact

For Atilay Uslu, Corendon’s success in Curaçao is about more than business. It’s a deeply personal journey that reflects his belief in the island’s potential. “Curaçao is on the right path,” Uslu said. “This is a place where talent and effort can thrive, and we are here to stay.”

Through its investments in people, places, and the environment, Corendon has not only redefined tourism in Curaçao but also inspired confidence in the island’s future. From transforming neglected neighborhoods to empowering local talent and creating world-class hotels, Corendon is proving that tourism can be a force for good.
