They don’t care about us

Some of us witnessed it, you know. Our own classmate attempting suicide. We heard about the situation at home. We heard about bullying from students. We heard about bullying from teachers. The administration knew about it. Nothing was done to help.

Situation, Speculation, Everybody, Intimidation. We have questions. We empathize. We are saddened. Many of us can't even comprehend it. Some of us were sent home. The rest had to attend class. It was dismissed as an 'accident'. We were allowed to talk about it briefly, and then we had to move on with the school policy. Don't talk about it anymore. Get good grades, regardless of everything, because that's good for the school's image. All I want to say is that they don't really care about us.

Don’t you wrong or right me. Don’t you victim shame me. Everyone outside of school is talking about it. Suddenly, everyone wants to know everything about the victim. "Where are the parents?" Father is deceased, mother couldn't care less about her. Is that clear enough? "She's different, you know?" She's unique, and we cherish every life, that's what you're supposed to say. Unfortunately, they always think they know better. Don't talk about it anymore. Behave as we say, because that's good for the school's image. All I want to say is that they don't really care about us.

Tell me what has become of my rights? Am I invisible 'cause you ignore me? Talking, talking, and more talking, except directly with us. Are we listened to when we need it? Is anything done when we report it? Are our rights still being upheld? Where is the school's obligation to ensure our safety? Is anything being done to prevent this from happening again? Some of us haven't noticed anything. Maybe it's not good for the school's image. All I want to say is that they don't really care about us.

We’re tired of being the victim of shame. They're throwin’ us in a class with a bad name. We also want to mention: it's not the first time something shocking happens at school and it's swept under the rug. Reports are made, and nothing happens. Moreover, now we're being reprimanded because we've expressed our feelings and sent them as a submitted piece to the media. You can count on that. That's what our dear principal and her own posse ensure. Everything for the hypocritical school image. All I want to say is that they don't really care about us.
