Open letter to the Parliament and the Government of Curaçao

Dear members of Parliament, dear government of Curaçao,

Curaçao is at an important crossroads in decision-making about the future of the Isla refinery. To be able to make a good assessment of such a big decision, all options need to be on the table. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The scenario of sustainable redevelopment and closure of the refinery has not been selected.

We, therefore, require the government to first develop an alternative plan before a MoU is signed to continue the refinery, so that each individual MP can decide whether Curaçao must continue refining or take the path of redevelopment of the refinery terrain and start with a sustainable, self-sufficient economy, in line with GreenTown's vision.

This request is in line with the National Decree of 2013, whereby the MDPT was instructed to also prepare a fallback scenario in connection with a possible closure of the refinery, followed by decommissioning and remediation of the sites and the socio-economic redevelopment. Despite the cost of nineteen million guilders for the MDPT, this has never taken place and they have only kept themselves busy with the continuation of the refinery.

We demand that the scenario of sustainable redevelopment be further investigated. Many opinion leaders in Curaçao and abroad want to assist you with this.
