Strategic move by the RKCS to combat the shortage of qualified teachers
WILLEMSTAD - The Board for Catholic Education in Curaçao (RKCS) takes a pioneering step by engaging in an innovative teacher training program in collaboration with the University of Curaçao (UoC). The RKCS has approached the University of Curaçao with the aim of developing tailored upgrade programs focused on specific categories of educators.

The current shortage of teachers, both locally and internationally, is a well-known phenomenon. In addition to recruiting teachers from abroad (Aruba, Bonaire, the Netherlands, and Suriname), the RKCS has introduced an alternative approach: upgrading existing teachers. At the initiative of the RKCS, the UoC has developed customized programs for three specific categories of teachers: teaching assistants, kindergarten teachers, and teachers who originally completed their teacher training in Suriname. In total, about 60 RKCS staff members qualify for these programs. Upon completion of the accredited UoC program, they will be appointed as qualified teachers and can immediately fill a vacancy at the RKCS.
The funding for these programs is fully covered by the RKCS. The duration of the training varies between 1½ and 3 years, depending on the category in which the teacher/staff member falls. The programs highlight essential topics such as language proficiency, pedagogy, educational science, co-teaching, digital literacy, and didactics.
This tailor-made training is designed to seamlessly integrate with the working hours of staff/teachers. Classes are offered two to three times a week in the late afternoon or early evening, allowing participants to effectively combine work and study. UoC is currently in the preparatory phase to have everything ready for the start of the program in August/September 2024.
The Vision of the RKCS
This collaboration reflects the vision of the RKCS, as outlined in the strategic policy plan for the period 2021-2025, titled "Den union pa tur nos hobennan" (Together for all our youth). The policy goal of collaborating with strong and flexible organizations is fully pursued through this partnership. The RKCS looks forward to the effective collaboration with the UoC and takes pride in this joint effort to enhance the developmental opportunities for the youth in Curaçao.
