WILLEMSTAD - The Curaçao Public Prosecutor's Office (OM) has announced stricter measures, including immediate criminal prosecution, against taxpayers who fail to meet their obligations.
Recent statistics reveal that approximately 45% of business taxpayers neglect to file income tax returns despite receiving official reminders. To address this issue, the OM has confirmed it will initiate direct legal action under certain conditions.
Convictions and Penalties
In a recent crackdown, six business owners and a tax advisor were handed conditional prison sentences ranging from one to two months for failing to file tax returns. They have been ordered to file overdue returns and settle payments dating back to 2018 within a probation period of three years.
Higher Stakes for Managers and Professionals
The OM warns that managers of large companies and tax professionals face stricter scrutiny and harsher penalties. This includes the possibility of partially unconditional prison sentences if found in violation of tax laws.
Call for Compliance
The Public Prosecutor urges the public to submit their tax filings on time to avoid legal repercussions. These measures aim to enhance compliance and ensure fairness within the tax system, emphasizing that timely action can prevent serious consequences.
The intensified enforcement is part of broader efforts to address tax evasion and uphold fiscal responsibility across Curaçao.
