WILLEMSTAD - The requirements that Foundation Education (FO) sets for parents cause a lot of stress for both parents and children. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by the University of Curaçao, in collaboration with two researchers.
1150 parents, of whom at least one child is in the FO, participated in the research. Parents spend more than two hours a day supporting their children while doing homework. Slightly more than half of these parents indicate that in addition to their help, there is also an extra person present within the family who supports the children with homework.
According to the research, all this time has a negative effect on the well-being of the parents. Not only in their private life but also in their functioning at work. One-third of the parents surveyed indicate that the FO's requirements are not good for their child either.
“The picture emerges that for a large proportion of parents, the involvement that school demands no longer seems healthy in the sense that it causes stress, exhaustion and reduced well-being for parent and child,” it describes. The respondents give the FO a meager 5 as an assessment.
