Building bridges: Minister Dijkgraaf's mission to strengthen education in the Dutch Caribbean

Main news | By Correspondent April 15, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf of the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science (OCW) recently concluded a pivotal working visit to the Caribbean, where he emphasized the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of education and research. Reflecting on his trip, Minister Dijkgraaf expressed optimism about the progress made and the potential for further cooperation among educational institutions.

"I look back on a very successful knowledge mission to Aruba and Curaçao," Minister Dijkgraaf remarked. "It's fantastic that educational and knowledge institutions, including vocational education, higher education, and universities, have embraced collaboration in these areas."

Central to Minister Dijkgraaf's visit was his participation in the second working conference of the Strategic Education Alliance (SEA) held on Curaçao. Attended by representatives from all islands in the Caribbean and the Netherlands, SEA aims to promote academic success and equal opportunities for Caribbean students.

During the conference, discussions focused on key issues such as the transition from secondary education to vocational education and SEA's objectives of facilitating student mobility, providing transitional programs for university-bound students, and aligning education with the demands of the labor market.

The presence of secondary and vocational schools from the Caribbean, alongside Dutch institutions, underscored the collective commitment to fostering educational excellence. Moreover, active participation from students across the Kingdom highlighted the importance of engaging the next generation in shaping the future of education.

SEA's emphasis on knowledge-sharing and best practices through working conferences aligns with its overarching goal of strengthening education and expanding opportunities for Caribbean students. Minister Dijkgraaf emphasized the need for continuous dialogue and collaboration to address challenges and seize opportunities in the education sector.

One significant obstacle identified during the conference was the bureaucratic hurdle faced by students seeking to study in the Netherlands. The requirement to apply for a citizen service number (BSN) upon arrival posed logistical challenges, hindering students from making necessary preparations before departure.

In a symbolic gesture, Minister Dijkgraaf presented the first BSN on Curaçao to Sibella Mendez, a prospective medical student at the VU Amsterdam. This gesture underscored the government's commitment to overcoming barriers and facilitating smoother transitions for students pursuing higher education abroad.

As Minister Dijkgraaf concluded his visit, the message resonated clear: by fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and addressing challenges collectively, the Caribbean can unlock its full potential in education, ensuring brighter futures for all students in the region.
