University of Curaçao Announces Major Strategic Shift with Focus on Research and New Medical Faculty

WILLEMSTAD – The University of Curaçao (UoC) is preparing for a major shift in direction. Rector magnificus Stella van Rijn announced that the institution will reform its budgeting model, place greater emphasis on research, and begin preparations for a new medical faculty with a unique focus.

According to Van Rijn, UoC will move away from the traditional annual budget model and adopt a results-based funding system, in which resources are allocated according to concrete goals and outcomes.

“We will never again simply ask for money, but always request financing for a new program or course,” she explained. The new approach is intended to create more transparency by clearly showing the costs of each program and what outcomes are achieved with the funding.

Research at the Core

After decades of prioritizing education, UoC is now making research a central pillar of its mission once more. The university is currently involved in more than 40 research projects. Partnerships with knowledge institutions such as Carmabi and DCNA are expected to further strengthen this direction.

Van Rijn emphasized that research should visibly contribute to Curaçao’s social and economic development.

Innovative Medical FacultyA third key element of the new strategy is the establishment of a medical faculty. Unlike traditional medical schools, this faculty will not focus on training doctors, but on preparing professionals who specialize in preventive healthcare and social cohesion.

Van Rijn highlighted that this fits into the global trend of applied sciences: higher education that bridges theoretical knowledge with practical applications in society.

Curriculum and Professional Involvement

The university also aims to involve entrepreneurs and professionals more closely in shaping the curriculum. UoC is exploring ways to make programs more accessible to working individuals who wish to further develop their skills, particularly in legal and financial fields.

With these changes, the University of Curaçao seeks to position itself more clearly as a knowledge hub deeply connected to practice and society. “It’s not about the type of study you pursue, but about what you can do afterward,” said Van Rijn. “Our role is to help students find their path in the sector where they want to work or build their business.”
