Unions call on members to form block against government after announcement austerity measures

WILLEMSTAD - Union Solidarity believes that the unions in Curaçao cannot assist the government in taking the workers to the slaughterhouse. Union Solidarity says that it will do just that if they support the austerity measures announced by the Minister of Finance during his recent dissertation in parliament.

Union Solidarity indicates that they are concerned about the recent development on the island which would affect the labor sector. For some time now, the organization has been warning the unions about certain negative developments in Curaçao. “The situation is getting worse and worse, but the government seems to be doing nothing to reverse this,” says the union organization.

“We don’t feel that there are actions taking to solve our economical problems. We don’t see anything that this government is doing that could give us hope for a better future.”

The union says that on several occasions it has told its members and the government that it will not accept more measures that would hurt the workers. “The government acts like the workers are at fault that things are not going the way they should be on this island. Why should they suffer?”
