Ten percent of Curaçao ministers' salary goes to the Food Bank

WILLEMSTAD - Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath announced on Monday that all ministers in his cabinet will give up ten percent of their salary at the end of the month as a result of the corona crisis. That money will be deposited directly into the food bank account.

Rhuggenaath indicated that his government is working on other cutbacks, such as a three-year zero line for all officials and the option of voluntary retirement for government officials. Curaçao received a first loan from the Netherlands in April and is now discussing a new loan. Rhuggenaath is confident that the Netherlands will lend money to Curaçao again.

Minister of Finance Kenneth Gijsbertha said on Monday that he regrets that the Netherlands has many conditions for a new loan. He believes that it is "not correct". "If someone needs help, you should initially help them and not set additional conditions that would even make us change our laws," said Gijsbertha. The Netherlands wants a new loan to go hand in hand with putting public finances in order.
